Literature House
A House of Literature is an institution dedicated to the teaching of literature endeavors of the present and encourages the discourse on literature. It is run by public or private sponsors and is often organized as an association or foundation .
organization
The first literary house was opened in Berlin in 1986 , since then there are literary houses in Hamburg (1989), Frankfurt am Main , Vienna and Salzburg (all 1991) and many other cities in Germany , Austria and Switzerland , but also in Italy , Scandinavia , Belgium etc. . was founded.
Literature houses are either located in their own house (e.g. Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Salzburg) or are part of a house or house complex (e.g. Cologne, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Basel), some are closely related to the local university (e.g. Graz, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt). In any case, literature houses are usually used all year round, many take a summer break like the theater.
Most of the literary houses receive funding from the public purse, some of them generate part of the budget through sponsorship, renting and leasing, entrance fees and membership fees. Some literary houses operate a café , accommodate literary establishments and literary groups, run a library and media center and a bookstore . The Literaturhaus in Vienna also maintains an extensive database with registers of book titles, periodicals, newspaper clippings and university papers on Austrian literature.
Literature houses are regionally anchored in their city and country, but thanks to their cooperation partners and with their often international and multilingual program, they often shine far beyond their borders. Outwardly, a literary house usually appears in connection with the respective city name.
As different as the sponsorship, concepts, etc. of literary houses can be, a literary house director and a manager (sometimes united in one person) are always responsible.
program
Literature houses organize readings with well-known authors or to promote young talent, organize programs for children and young people, film and radio play evenings, exhibitions and workshops, literary festivals and symposia, lectures and panel discussions, and introduce literary translators . Many literary houses presented their programs in series and regularly set program priorities, for example on current topics, on literature from certain countries or language areas.
network
The literaturhaus.net network brings together 14 literature houses from the German-speaking area: nine from Germany (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Stuttgart, Rostock, Leipzig, Göttingen, Wiesbaden), three Austrian literature houses (Salzburg, Graz, Vienna) and two Swiss ( Zurich, Basel) with its own coordination office in Hamburg. Since 2002, the program directors of the literary houses have been awarding the prize of the literary houses to German-speaking authors every year at the Leipzig Book Fair for extraordinary text and presentation qualities. The literary house brings poetry to the city campaign has been jointly organized since 1999 : poems advertise on posters, city lights, etc. in public space for lyrical lingering in everyday life in the literary house cities.
In Austria, the literature houses and literature centers do not operate their own network, but have been developing joint projects under the title mitSsprachig since 2003 and are focusing on national events in all nine federal states: literature & democracy (2004), literature & 2005 (award ceremony for Bettina Balàka and Franz Schuh ), Literature & Identity (2006), Literature & Media (2007), literary reports in the footsteps of Joseph Roth (2009/2010), speeches on the situation (2012, ten critical speeches by Austrian authors such as Josef Winkler , Sabine Gruber , Bodo Hell and Ludwig Laher , presented around the national holiday at special locations such as Vienna's Stephansplatz, Graz Regional Court for Criminal Matters, Mattersburg football stadium).
partner
Many literary houses work together with partners. Often they are cooperation partners from the field of culture and the media , sometimes also from business . The network of literary houses has maintained a media partnership with the Franco-German TV culture broadcaster ARTE for years .
