Literature Forum Southwest
The Literatur Forum Südwest e. V. is a non - commercial, non - profit association for the promotion of literature based in Freiburg im Breisgau . It was founded in 1988 and runs the Freiburg Literature House.
history
In 1988 authors from Freiburg and the region founded the Literatur Forum Südwest , an association that was supposed to create a place for authors from the region to talk about emerging texts. The group of authors was soon joined by the strong group of literary translators in Freiburg and in 1992 the Freiburg Literature Office was set up in a room made available by the city in the former Marienbad. From 2003 to 2017 the Literatur Forum Südwest and the Freiburg Literature Office were located together with the Freiburg Municipal Cinema in the old Wiehrebahnhof, the "House for Film and Literature". In autumn 2017 the location will move to the old university. For this purpose, rooms in the old university in Freiburg were converted. Among other things, a theater hall with an area of 260 m² and 130 seats was built. An important point is the installed inductive hearing system, which ensures accessibility for the hearing impaired .
The first public event was on January 17, 1988, 12 authors appeared in the “Städtische Galerie Schwarzes Kloster” in a group reading with musical accompaniment. In 1997 there was a crisis, because the financing was on the brink due to the expiry of the ABM funding and the content of the discussions was also held as to whether his task in southern Baden was not already done. This was cleared through the provision of a budget by the city and state subsidies.
The first managing director was Wolfgang Sandfuchs from 1992 under him they took part in the book fair in Colmar , were part of the working group “The Blue Puma”, and strengthened the cooperation with the city libraries in Freiburg and Lörrach as well as other cultural and social institutions. After his change to the management of the Schleswig Holstein Literature House in Kiel , Martin Gülich succeeded him in 2000 , with a focus on establishing himself more firmly in the city with the program “A city reads” and intensifying youth work through cooperation with the High School Office and the "House of Youth". In 2005 Martin Gülich and Kai Weynand left the Literaturhaus. Stefanie Stegmann became the new head, she initiated two large projects with partners in the Ukraine once "ZUG '76" and the year after "Alternating current". Ms. Stegmann moved to the Literaturhaus Stuttgart in 2014 , her successor being Martin Bruch, a co-editor of the literary magazine " Bella triste ".
tasks
The Literatur Forum Südwest sees itself as a promoter and mediator of literature. It accomplishes this task through the organization and implementation of readings and other literary events, writing and translation workshops and other events in which literary translation is the focus. Around 90 to 100 events are held annually for this purpose, ranging from classic readings and lectures to panel discussions and cross-disciplinary performances with special listening and viewing experiences. It is also an advice center for literary organizers as well as for literary and translating professionals. The association is financed by contributions and donations, municipal funding and project funds from the state of Baden-Württemberg. Another important aspect is the promotion of young people. For example, in 2019 the 15th Literaturhaus writing competition under the theme of “White Giants” instead of young people from 12 to 18 years of age taking part. There is also a traineeship for Master’s students in the “European Literature and Cultures” or “Newer” courses German literature, culture, media ”.
Publications
In 1997 the literary office published a list of authors for the region, in which authors living there are presented with biographies, photos and a text excerpt, as well as several anthologies with literary texts by students.
