Lizzie Doron, German-Israeli Literature Days 2012

Lizzie Doron ( Hebrew ליזי דורון; * 1953 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli writer living in Tel Aviv. She belongs to the so-called “second generation” in Israel: the Holocaust successor generation .

life and work

Lizzie Doron grew up in a neighborhood on the southern outskirts of Tel Aviv in a Yiddish- speaking community where survivors of the Shoah had settled and the area with the planting of numerous trees and bushes gave the area a green image that is still characteristic of today. Doron left the district at the age of 18 to live as a kibbutznik on the Golan Heights , "far away, to forget the world and the insatiable sadness of the people who came from 'there'". She then studied linguistics.

Her mother died in 1990. When Lizzie Doron's daughter asked where she was from, she found that she could not answer many questions. Her book Why Didn't You Come Before the War? originated. It was published in Israel in 1998 and in a German translation by Mirjam Pressler in 2004 . The book is a homage to the mother, who draws a picture of the mother in individual stories and thus created the picture of the generation of those who survived the Shoah and tried to gain a foothold in Israel. The book is now part of school reading in Israel.

She herself said about her relationship with her mother:

“My daughter taught me a lesson. At school, she should write down her family history. I helped her and my first book came out of it. I myself had a very charged, complicated relationship with my mother. I was ashamed of the fact that she often behaved like a madwoman, yes, that she was a survivor of the Holocaust. I wanted to be an Israeli and I thought everyone had to be brave, everyone a fighter. For me my mother was one of those lambs who let themselves be led to the slaughter. It was only through my daughter that I realized how brave my mother was. "

Her second book, Hajitah po pa'am Mischpacha , was published in Germany in 2010 under the title “Once upon a time there was a family”. It was created in memory of seven classmates who were killed in the 1973 Yom Kippur War . The third novel, Ruhige Zeiten , was published again in German in 2004 by Mirjam Pressler in 2005. It too has autobiographical traits and describes life in the Tel Aviv neighborhood in which she grew up, he continues with the generation of Holocaust survivors apart. For this novel, she was awarded the 2003 Buchmann Prize by Yad Vashem .

In her also autobiographical novel sound Ve yom echad od nipagesch (dt. 2009 The silence of my mother , 2011) tells of a woman who tries to find out why she grew up without a father.

In her novel Who the Fuck Is Kafka she tells the life of a Palestinian from the East Jerusalem district of Silwan , whom she met in 2009 at a peace conference in Rome.

Doron's writing style is considered cool and clear.

In 2007 Lizzie Doron received the Jeanette Schocken Prize ; In 2018 she and Mirjam Pressler were awarded the Peace Prize of the Korn and Gerstenmann Foundation .

In the fall semester of 2019, Lizzie Doron was the holder of the Friedrich Dürrenmatt visiting professorship for world literature at the University of Bern .
