The Alvord Desert is a desert in the southeastern part of the US state Oregon . It is located southeast of Steens Mountain . She lies on a dry lake bed. Under the adverse conditions prevailing there, it is hardly possible for both animals and plants to survive. In the year it rains an average of only about 180 mm. Three mountains separate it from the Pacific Ocean. These are Steens Mountain, the Cascade Range , and the Oregon Coast Range , in whose rain shadow it is located.

In the Alvord Desert , Kitty O'Neil set a new land speed record with the SMI Motivator rocket car . However, since the Motivator only had three wheels, the record was not recognized by the FIA, the world automobile association . After the world motorcycle association FIM confirmed the record, Kitty O'Neil has since been considered the "fastest woman in the world".
