Pierre Lemaitre
Pierre Lemaitre (born April 19, 1951 in Paris ) is a French writer and screenwriter. In 2013 he was awarded the most important French literary prize, the Prix Goncourt , for his novel Au revoir là-haut .
life and work
Pierre Lemaitre worked as a literature teacher in the training of librarians. He is now a freelance writer. He has been a board member of Société des gens de lettres (SGDL) since 2011 .
His first novel Travail soigné is indebted to his literary role models Bret Easton Ellis , Émile Gaboriau , James Ellroy and William McIlvanney . In his second novel, Robe de marié, from 2009, Lemaitre tells the story of thirty-year-old Sophie, who is persecuted as a serial killer and cannot remember her bloody deeds. The socially critical thriller Cadres noirs from 2010 is about a faked hostage-taking. The book is based on a true incident among employees of the French television advertising company France Télévisions Publicité in 2005, for which manager Philippe Santini was convicted in 2010. In Lemaitre's fourth novel Alex , the main character in a confusing game alternates between perpetrator and victim.
With the novel Au revoir là-haut (See you up there) Lemaitre left the crime and thriller genre and presented a historical novel for the first time. It is about two Poilus , common soldiers, after their return from the First World War . The book was filmed by Albert Dupontel in 2017 and was awarded the French César Film Prize in five categories, including the Scriptwriting Prize for Dupontel and Lemaitre.
Lemaitre's novels have been translated into more than 20 languages.
