Tobias Scheffel

Tobias Scheffel (born June 13, 1964 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German translator of French literature.

Life

Scheffel studied Romance studies, history and geography at the universities of Tübingen, Tours (France) and Freiburg. Since 1992 he has translated numerous works from French by, among others, Robert Bober , Fred Vargas , Gustave Flaubert , Jacques Le Goff , Viviane Forrester , Catherine Clément , Marie-Aude Murail , Pierre Lemaitre , Jacques Roubaud and Georges Perec . Scheffel is a member of the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works (VdÜ).

In 2005 he received the Eugen Helmlé Translation Prize, which was awarded for the first time, for his translations of the novels by Robert Bober and Fred Vargas. In 2008 he was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize for the book Simpel by Marie-Aude Murail, which he translated . In 2011 he received the special prize of the German Youth Literature Prize, with which his entire work as a translator was recognized.
