Eugen Helmlé translator award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eugen Helmlé Translator Award is a German literary award that has been awarded annually since 2005 for exceptional literary translation from French into German or from German into French.

history

The prize, which was launched in 2004 by the Saarländischer Rundfunk , SR, and the foundation of the Association of the Metal and Electrical Industry of Saarland and awarded for the first time in 2005, commemorates the Saarland writer and translator Eugen Helmlé .

The prize is awarded annually around September 7th, Helmlé's birthday. It was initially endowed with € 6000. In 2010 the city of Sulzbach / Saar joined the previous sponsors as the third party and the prize money was increased to € 10,000.

In recognition of Eugen Helmlé's services, because he lived here for a long time, the area behind the local event building "AULA Sulzbach / Saar" was named "Eugen-Helmlé-Forum". The sculptor Leo Kornbrust made a sculpture for this, which is reminiscent of Eugen Helmlé. In front of this sculpture, a plaque with the names of the winners of the translation award was placed. The 2010 award winner was Olivier Le Lay, who has translated numerous works by Peter Handke into French. Handke was present at this award ceremony.

The annual award ceremony takes place in the AULA in Sulzbach. The management of the award lies with Saarländischer Rundfunk.
