Sonja Ulrike Finck (born 1978 in Moers ) is a German- Canadian literary translator and trained artist .

Sonja Finck initially trained as an artist at the “Le Lido” circus school in Toulouse and financed her studies in literary translation at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf between 1998 and 2004 as a juggler . Finck has been working as a freelance translator of novels, short stories, plays, documentaries and academic texts since 2004 and translates from French, English and Spanish into German.

Even in her diploma thesis on Assia Djebar , Sonja Finck critically discussed the translation as an often sought-after “invisibility” and “transparency” between the original text and its reception, since the level of translation should mostly go unnoticed. Without wanting to completely reject this prevailing principle, however, it is desirable that it be “abandoned in favor of a differentiated model” in which the “mediating authority” of the translation is more clearly recognized as such. In this sense, Finck repeated in an interview with the newspaper Der Freitag on the occasion of the translation of Les Années by Annie Ernaux that, as the translator of the book, she tried to be "Annie Ernaux in the voice of Sonja Finck".

The approach of differentiating the principle of the “invisibility” of the translator themselves through visibility has been reinforced by Finck since 2005 through readings - otherwise typical for authors - and through moderation of panel discussions, for example at the Frankfurt Book Fair , the “Fest des Jewish book ”in the Duisburg synagogue or the Berlin International Literature Festival .

She received the André Gide Prize in 2006 for her translation of Leslie Kaplan's novel Fever . In her acceptance speech, she pointed out that she had not been commissioned by any publisher to do this work: “I chose this text myself, which is rarely used in our Métier. And I have found that you can never translate better than when you feel a real relationship to the text. "

In June 2007, Finck signed Navid Kermani and Michael Kleeberg's declaration of solidarity for Salman Rushdie , who had been threatened again: ... the freedom of art (is) a non-negotiable good .

Between 2009 and 2013 Finck worked on the translations for subtitles, voiceover and voice-off versions of several documentaries for the television station Arte .

In 2017, she and the author Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock were awarded the German Youth Literature Prize for the children's book The Smell of Other People's Houses .

Denis Scheck described Finck's new translation of Annie Ernaux ' Der Platz as "brilliantly translated".

Sonja Finck lives in Berlin and Gatineau, Canada .
