Annie Ernaux , née Duchesne (born September 1, 1940 in Lillebonne , Seine-Maritime ), is a French writer . Her literary work is essentially autobiographical . Life

Ernaux spent her childhood and youth in Yvetot in Normandy. She grew up in modest circumstances. Her parents were initially workers and later ran a small shop with a café. She attended a lycée and studied in Rouen and Bordeaux . Ernaux then worked as a teacher at the high school in Bonneville , at the Collège d'Évire in Annecy-le-Vieux , in Pontoise and at the Center national d'enseignement à distance (CNED).

Literary career

In 1974 Ernaux published her first autobiographical novel Les Armoires vides . In 1984 she received the Prix ​​Renaudot for La Place .

The novel Les Années , published in 2008, has received several awards. Also in 2008 she received the "Prix de la langue française" for her complete works.

In 2011 she published L'Autre Fille , a letter to her sister who had died as a six-year-old child, two years before the author's birth. Also in 2011 was L'Atelier noir , a collection of notes, plans and thoughts on her work. The anthology Écrire la vie was also published in 2011 in Quarto . In addition to most of her autobiographical works, this includes photographs and diary clippings.

In April 2016 she published another autobiographical work, Mémoire de fille (Memory of a Girl), in which she deals with the first sexual experiences made in the summer of 1958 and their lifelong effects. She writes of the "memory of shame":

Annie Ernaux is regarded as "one of the most formative voices in contemporary French literature". She is received positively in the university environment and her work is the subject of numerous academic papers.
