Cergy is a French commune with 65,177 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Val-d'Oise department in north-west Paris . It is 27.8 kilometers from Paris city center and is located in the Cergy-Pontoise agglomeration . Cergy was founded in the 1960s and is the center of the new cities of Cergy-Pontoise with the greatest population density. The inhabitants are called Cergyssois .
Although the neighboring Pontoise is the official prefecture of the department , the administrative headquarters are in Cergy. On the other hand, the buildings of the sub-prefecture are in the Commune of Pontoise.
Surname
The name Cergy comes from the Middle Latin word Sergiacum and means "estate of Sergius" (a Gallo-Roman landowner).
Population development
When Cergy was chosen to be the center of the Ville nouvelle in Cergy-Pontoise , it was only a small village with 2895 inhabitants (1968). After that, the population developed rapidly, with over 10,000 residents in the mid-1970s and over 20,000 in the early 1980s. The population in 1990 was around 48,000, after which the population slowed down, but rose to 54,500 in 2004. In 2011 there were 58,300 inhabitants.

Port Cergy is a marina on the River Oise . It offers space for 103 ships from 5 to 22 m in length. The northern part of the harbor is reserved for restaurants and shops and was built around a small harbor basin.
