L'Isle-Adam is a French municipality with 12,057 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Val-d'Oise in the region of Ile-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Pontoise and is the capital of the canton of the same name . The inhabitants are called Adamois .

geography

The city is located in the Banlieue northwest of Paris . In the west the city borders on the river Oise , on all other sides it is surrounded by the Forêt de L'Isle-Adam .

Neighboring municipalities are Parmain , Champagne-sur-Oise , Mours , Presles , Nerville-la-Forêt , Villiers-Adam , Butry-sur-Oise , Mériel and Valmondois .

Personalities

  • Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) stayed in 1827 at the invitation of the mayor in L'Isle-Adam. In a letter to his sister he wrote that L'Isle-Adam was his paradise on earth . His work Physiology of Marriage ( La physiologie du mariage ) was written there.
