Mériel is a French municipality with 5083 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Val-d'Oise in the region of Ile-de-France . It is part of the canton of Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône in the Pontoise arrondissement . The inhabitants are called Mériellois (es) .
geography
Mériel is located in the Vexin landscape ( Vexin Français Regional Nature Park ) on the Oise River , about thirty kilometers north of Paris.
Mériel is surrounded by the neighboring communities of L'Isle-Adam in the north and north-east, Villiers-Adam in the east and south-east, Méry-sur-Oise in the south and south-west, Auvers-sur-Oise in the south-west and Butry-sur-Oise in the west.
The Francilienne runs along the south-eastern edge of the municipality . Mériel train station is on the Paris-Nord to Persan-Beaumont railway line .
history
The history of the municipality is linked to the Notre Dame du Val Abbey . The Cistercian monastery was founded in 1125 (and dissolved in 1790). The remains have been under protection as Monument historique since 1947/1950 . In 1914 the bridge over the Oise was blown up. The Wehrmacht deployed V1 rockets from here in 1943/1944.
