Location of the association of municipalities
in the Île-de-France region

Cergy-Pontoise is the name of one of five Villes nouvelles in the greater Paris area. All of the municipalities and towns belonging to it together also form the Communauté d'agglomération de Cergy-Pontoise . Cergy-Pontoise is about 30 km northwest of Paris . The Ville nouvelle was created on April 16, 1969 from the amalgamation of 15 communes from the Val-d'Oise department and was dissolved on December 31, 2002. As a result, a community of almost the same communes was founded on January 1, 2004 , which today (2016) consists of 13 communities. The administrative headquarters are in Cergy . The inhabitants call themselves Cergy-Pontains .

The place is the seat of the state university Cergy-Pontoise with about 12,000 students and the ESSEC , one of the important universities for management in France.
