Franz Schultheis

Franz Schultheis (* 1953 in Bendorf ) is a German sociologist . He teaches as a professor at the University of St. Gallen .

Schultheis studied at the University of Freiburg and the University of Nancy II , and received his doctorate from the University of Konstanz , where he was research assistant and senior assistant from 1989 to 1992 . At the same time his long-term collaboration with Pierre Bourdieu began in Paris . Since 1993, Schultheis has held substitute professorships and teaching positions at various Paris universities, including the Sorbonne . In 1994 he completed his habilitation with Bourdieu at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). From 1994 to 1998 he was Assistant Professor at the University of Geneva , followed by six months as a visiting researcher at the University of Montreal . In 1999 Schultheis became Professor of Economic Sociology at the University of Neuchâtel , in 2003 he accepted a professorship for Social Structure Analysis at the University of Geneva and has been Professor of Sociology at the University of St. Gallen since 2007.

Schultheis was instrumental in spreading Bourdieu's sociology in the German-speaking world. He became known to a wider public as the publisher of the book “Gesellschaft mitlimitedhaftung. Impositions and suffering in everyday German life " (2005), which methodologically leaned on the study " La misère du monde " (German: The misery of the world , 1997) published by Bourdieu .
