Saint-Leu-la-Foret is a French commune in the department of Val-d'Oise in the region of Ile-de-France . It belongs to the canton of Domont in the Argenteuil arrondissement .
geography
The community with 15,798 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is located on the north-northwestern edge of the Paris agglomeration , 26 kilometers from Notre Dame Cathedral and twelve kilometers from the city of Saint-Denis . 146 hectares of the 524 hectares of community area are forested.
history
Family members of Napoleon Bonaparte owned estates nearby , the place was the burial place of Louis Bonaparte and two of his sons.
The lordship of Saint-Leu-lès-Taverny is mentioned in 1479 at the latest. There have been mayors since the French Revolution in 1789. In 1790 the Seine-et-Oise department was created, in which the village was located. From 1794 the community was called Claire-Fontaine cy-devant Saint-Leu ("Claire-Fontaine formerly Saint-Leu") or Claire-Fontaine for short . With the decree of June 16, 1806, the municipality was merged with Taverny to Saint-Leu-Taverny . Between 1852 and 1870 it was renamed Napoléon-Saint-Leu-Taverny . In October 1915, the communities became independent again and Saint-Leu-la-Forêt was given its current name. By dividing the department, it has been in the new Val-d'Oise department since 1968.
