Bezons is a commune with 29,383 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the Val-d'Oise department in France . The inhabitants are called Bezonnais .

geography

Bezons is the southernmost municipality in the Val-d'Oise department. It is bounded in the southeast by the Seine , which forms the border with the Hauts-de-Seine department . The neighboring municipalities of Bezons are Argenteuil in the northeast, Colombes in the southeast, Nanterre in the south, Carrières-sur-Seine in the southwest, Houilles in the west and Sartrouville in the northwest.

Bezons is connected to Colombes and Nanterre via the Pont de Bezons .

Population development

In 1470 there were only twelve houses in Bezons. The city's population increased from just 468 in 1793 to over 25,000 at the beginning of the 21st century. The population recorded a particularly strong increase in the first half of the 20th century.

politics

Like many suburbs of Paris ( banlieue rouge ), Bezons is a stronghold of the political left , especially the Parti communiste français . The community has been ruled by PCF mayors since the party was founded in 1920; Acting officer since 2001 is Dominique Lesparre.

In March 2013, the city attracted worldwide attention when it made Majdi Rimawi , a fighter for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine sentenced to life imprisonment, an honorary citizen. According to Israeli sources, he is believed to be responsible for the murder of Minister Rechaw'am Ze'ewi and several terrorist attacks in Jerusalem.
