Downpatrick ( Irish : Dún Pádraig = Castle of Patrick ) is a city in Northern Ireland . It was the administrative seat of historic County Down and is now one of the two administrative seats of the District of Newry, Morne and Down .
The population of the city was determined in the 2011 Census at 10,822 people. Downpatrick is 20 miles south of Belfast on the south-west corner of Strangford Lough . The tomb of the Irish national saint Patrick , who was buried here in 461 or 492/493 and where numerous pilgrims and tourists appear on the day of his death, March 17th ( St. Patrick's Day ), is located near the city's cathedral . The city's St. Patrick's Center documents his life story. Downpatrick is also home to the grave of Saint Brigid of Kildare .
Downpatrick also has the Down County Museum and Down Civics Art Center. A railway line with historic steam locomotives is also operated from Downpatrick. To the east of the city are the Holy Springs of Struell Wells and the Court Tomb of Ballyalton . Glovet's basement , restored in the 1980s, is roughly southwest of Downpatrick.
