Taverny is a French commune in the department of Val-d'Oise in the region of Ile-de-France . It belongs to the Argenteuil arrondissement and is the administrative seat ( chief lieu ) of the canton of Taverny . The place has 26,441 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The operations center of the French strategic nuclear air force has been located in Taverny since 1963 .
geography
Taverny is located 92 m above sea level, about 20 kilometers north of Paris . The urban area covers 10.4 km² and is densely populated with 2,491 inhabitants per km². To the east, the large forest of the Forêt Domaniale de Montmorency borders the urban area. The city is part of the Montmorency Valley.

history
The first documentary mention dates back to 754 (Pippin Charter).
In the second half of the Hundred Years War , in 1346, Taverny was occupied and destroyed by the British after the Battle of Crécy .
The region achieved considerable prosperity under the reign of Louis XI. In the following years Taverny belonged to the property of the Counts of Montmorency.
By decree of June 16, 1806, the municipality of Taverny was merged with Claire-Fontaine cy-devant Saint-Leu to become Saint-Leu-Taverny . From 1852 to 1870 it was renamed Napoléon-Saint-Leu-Taverny . In October 1915, the communities of Taverny and now Saint-Leu-la-Forêt became independent again.
