Nanterre is a western suburb of the French capital Paris, on the banks of the Seine . The municipality with 95,105 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is the seat of the Hauts-de-Seine department and since 1966 the seat of the diocese of Nanterre . The inhabitants used to be called Nanterrois , today they are called Nanterriens .
The place shares the well-known high-rise district La Défense with the neighboring communities Courbevoie and Puteaux .

history
Nanterre is the seat of the Université de Paris X , the philosophical faculty of which, with the March 22nd movement, was the starting point for France's 68 movement .
The municipality tends politically to the left and has been ruled by communist mayors since 1935 - only interrupted by the German occupation from 1940 to 1944 ; since 2014 this is Patrick Jarry . The settlement of the new headquarters of the right-wing National Front in 2007 was therefore accompanied by massive protests from local residents.
In 2002 there was a rampage there .
