André Raison

André Raison (* around 1640 in Nanterre , † 1719 in Paris ) was a French organist and composer .

Life

Raison received his training at the Abbey of Sainte-Geneviève in Nanterre , where he also received the post of organist. He also became organist at the Jesuit church on rue Saint-Jacques in Paris . Here he was described as one of the best organists in town towards the end of the 17th century. Louis-Nicolas Clérambault is counted among his pupils .

Johann Sebastian Bach took over a musical theme from Raison for his well-known “ Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor ” ( BWV 582)

Raison left two collections of organ works, the first published in 1688, the second in 1714. It contains five organ masses in the various church modes, "Noëls variés" (arrangements and variations on popular Christmas carols), a Magnificat and various other pieces.
