Areal factor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The area index is a value used in population geography. It is calculated using the formula "area in m²" divided by "population".

The area number indicates what area is available to the individual resident of a country or a region if the area is evenly distributed among all residents.

Some exemplary values:

  • State with the smallest area index: Monaco 56 m² / inhabitant (2.02 km² with 36,136 inhabitants)
  • Territorial state with the smallest areal index: Bangladesh 917 m² / inhabitant (147,570 km² with 161 million inhabitants)
  • Territorial state with the highest areal index : Mongolia 504,000 m² / inhabitant (1,564,116 km² with 3.1 million inhabitants)
  • Autonomous area with the largest areal index : Greenland 38 million m² / inhabitant (2,166,086 km² with 56,370 inhabitants)

For comparison: Germany 4,431 m² / inhabitant (357,121 km² with 80.586 million inhabitants)

The areal index represents the reciprocal of the population density .
