Marque as a sculptor

Room VII of the Salon d'Automne, Grand Palais, Paris, 1905. Jacqueline Marval is seated on the left of Marques sculpture, on the right Jules Flandrin . Louis Valtat and Albert Marque can also be seen.

The Marque, born in Nanterre in 1872, became known for his sculptures of children at the turn of the 20th century .

Marque is occasionally confused with Albert Marquet , a French Fauvist painter who was three years younger. The term " fauvism " is derived from the French word fauves ("wild beasts"). When a small group of painters, including Marquet and Henri Matisse with his painting Femme au chapeau ( Woman in a Hat) , exhibited their avant-garde pictures in Room VII of the Salon d'Automne in October 1905 , the art critic Louis Vauxcelles saw a woman between the paintings Florentine-style sculpture by Albert Marque. Vauxcelles' exclamation: "Tiens, Donatello au milieu des fauves." ("Look, Donatello surrounded by wild beasts.") Coined the name of the short-term art movement Fauvism .

A. Marque dolls

During the First World War , at the suggestion of the Parisian fashion house of Jeanne Margaine-LaCroix, Marque created 100 fashion dolls that were dressed by the fashion house. The heads and bodies of the 55 cm tall dolls were made according to Marques shapes by the Manufacture royale de porcelaine de Sèvres . The artist gave the dolls the signature A. Marque in the neck area. In 1915 the dolls were exhibited in Paris . Some were sold, the rest stayed with the fashion house. The clothes often represented those of the French nobility or the peasants. They were seen as artistic works of France and, in wartime, an answer to the popular German dolls, created for adults rather than children.

They are highly valued by doll collectors and are sold at top prices. On March 29, 2014, a doll boy with the number 27 set the world record in doll auctions. The auction at Theriault's in Annapolis, Maryland raised $ 300,000. The previous world record was $ 263,000 in June 2009, which was also paid for a Marque doll.

In her catalog for the Doll Artisan Guild, Ragnhild Margareta Ericson names 25 well-known A. Marque dolls. Stuart Holbrook, director of the leading doll auction house, Theriault's, explained that there are only about 20 A. Marque dolls left and called them the "Holy Grail of collectors".
