The Paris La Défense Arena is a rugby stadium with a closable roof in Nanterre , a suburb west of the French capital Paris . It is the home ground of the traditional rugby club Racing 92 .

history

The owner and operator of the Paris La Défense Arena is the gaming company of the rugby club Racing 92, which was formed in 2001 and which was founded in 1882 and represents the heights of the Seine in the western region of Paris.

Since 1907 it has been using the Stade Yves-du-Manoir in the Paris suburb of Colombes as its home ground, with a few interruptions , which, among other things, hosted the 1924 Summer Olympics . Due to its aging structure and the associated decline in audience capacity, it was decided in 2011 to move to a new stadium in Nanterre.

The completely redesigned Paris La Défense Arena was built on the site of the former Stade des Bouvets , in the immediate vicinity of the high-rise La Défense district . It offers space for up to 40,000 spectators, depending on the use. Its completion was originally planned for 2014 and later for 2016, but was delayed several times by a total of three years due to local residents' protests. The grand opening finally took place on October 16, 2017, followed by three concerts by the Rolling Stones band . Racing 92's first league game took place on December 22nd, 2017 with a 23:19 win over Stade Toulousain .

In addition to rugby games, the Paris La Défense Arena also offers space for numerous other events, such as concerts and sporting events. It has a modern multi-purpose construction with a closable roof, similar to the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, built in 2001, or the Telenor Arena in Fornebu, which opened in 2009 .

In mid-2018 the U Arena was renamed Paris La Défense Arena . The sponsorship agreement has a term of ten years. Every year three million euros are paid. The aim is to make the La Défense business district better known and more attractive.

The French pop singer Mylène Farmer organized a series of concerts in the Paris La Défense Arena from June 7 to 22, 2019, with nine performances in front of a total of 235,000 visitors.

For the Summer Olympics in 2024 in Paris under the name of the stadium is Arena 92 as the venue of the competitions in artistic gymnastics , rhythmic gymnastics and trampolining provided.
