Stade Toulousain is a multi- sport club from the French city of Toulouse , with the rugby union department being far superior to all other sports. The club has been French rugby champions 20 times and has won the European Heineken Cup four times , making it the most successful in the country. The home games are played in the Stade Ernest-Wallon . For championship play-offs and games in the Heineken Cup, Stade Toulousain is using the Municipal Stadium, which is twice as large .

Other departments of the club are baseball , swimming , water polo and tennis . The football department achieved some success at the beginning of the 20th century, but no longer exists today.

history

The club was founded in 1890 as the Stade Olympien des Étudiants Toulousains , so it saw itself as a student sports club. The football team won the Midi Region championship ten times in a row between 1905 and 1914 (at that time there was no national championship). They were also the first non-Spanish team to play against FC Barcelona in 1904 . The rugby team reached the championship finals for the first time in 1903, but lost to Stade Français Paris . After a merger in 1907, the club was known for a short time under the name Stade Olympien des Étudiants Velo Sport de Toulouse , but has had its current name since 1908.

The rugby team won the first of 20 championship titles in 1912. The 1920s are considered to be the club's “golden era”. The championship final of 1921 was lost to the USA Perpignan , but Stade Toulousain won the championship in 1922, 1923, 1924, 1926 and 1927. After this phase of dominance, the next decades were marked by unsuccessfulness. Although Stade Toulousain won the prestigious Challenge Yves du Manoir in 1934 , the team only reached the championship final again in 1947 and beat SU Agen . Again two unsuccessful decades followed; It was not until 1969 that Stade Toulousain surprisingly reached the final again, but was defeated by CA Bègles .

Game against Stade Français, January 27, 2007

Another defeat in a championship final came in 1980 against AS Béziers . The long dry spell came to an end in the second half of the 1980s. Stade Toulousain became one of the leading rugby clubs in the country again, winning the league title in 1985, 1986 and 1989. This dominance continued in the 1990s with winning the Challenge Yves du Manoir in 1993, 1995 and 1998 as well as the championship titles in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1999. In 1996, Stade Toulousain won the first-ever Heineken Cup . In the new millennium, Stade Toulousain has won the championship title five times (2001, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2019) and lost the championship finals twice (2005, 2006). There were also three other successes in the Heineken Cup (2003, 2005, 2010).
