Fabien Pelous (born December 7, 1973 in Toulouse , Haute-Garonne Department ) is a former French rugby union player . He played in the second row for Stade Toulousain and was part of the French national team until 2007 . He is the player with the most international matches in his country.

Career

Pelous made his national team debut on October 17, 1995 against Romania . In 2004 he became captain of the French and succeeded Fabien Galthié . The first tournament under his team leadership was the Six Nations 2004 , in which France won the Grand Slam . With Toulouse he managed to win the Heineken Cup in 2005 , where he was out due to a knee injury until the end of the year. In November he returned to the national team when they beat Australia 26:16 . However, he made an elbow bump against Australian Brendan Cannon in that game and was suspended for nine weeks.

He could not take part in the Six Nations 2007 due to an injury, so the honor as the record national player for France was postponed into the summer. Since he was not quite recovering from his injuries, Raphaël Ibañez was nominated to captain for the World Cup in his own country. On August 11, 2007 he finally managed to equalize Philippe Sella's record of 111 international matches , including an attempt against England . A week later both teams met again in Marseille , at the same time Pelous' 112th international match.

After the World Championships in France, Pelous ended his international career in which he appeared 118 times for France, including 42 times as captain. Following the World Cup final, he received the International Rugby Press Association Special Merit Award from the International Rugby Board . In 2017, Pelous was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame .

In addition to rugby, Pelous has been working as a winemaker together with footballer Djibril Cissé since 2002 and produces his own wine. In 2008, he campaigned for the re-election of Jean-Luc Moudenc as mayor of Toulouse, who however lost the election to Pierre Cohen .

Pelous took over the management of France A, the reserve of the national team, in January 2009. He will act as manager of the team along with ex-international Olivier Magne .
