Philippe Sella (born February 14, 1962 in Tonneins ) is a former French rugby union player who played on the position of the inner three quarters . He was the world record player for several years until Jason Leonard overtook him.

Career

Sella went to the French club SU Agen at the age of 20 , where he played for 13 years. There he won the French championship and the Challenge Yves du Manoir twice . With the end of the World Cup in 1995 and the resulting professionalization of the sport, he moved to England to the Saracens , where he ended his career in 1998. There he played together with the Australian Michael Lynagh , one of the top scorers in the sport. The team around these two international top stars managed to win the Tetley's Bitter Cup in 1998 , the Saracens' most important title win to this day.

He made his national team debut in 1982 against Romania as an outside three-quarters . Soon afterwards he switched to his regular position inside three quarters and was able to take advantage of his speed, agility and his playing intelligence. He also had excellent passing and tackle skills, making him one of the most versatile and dangerous players of his time. He made 30 attempts in 111 international matches , putting him in third place in the French attempt statistics behind Serge Blanco and Philippe Saint-André . He took part in the first World Championships in 1987 and the World Championships in 1991 and 1995, where he put a total of five attempts. With the French national team, in addition to second place at the 1987 World Cup, he achieved six victories at the Five Nations , including a Grand Slam .

Sella was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 1999 and the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2008. In 2008 he took over the management of the U20 national team of France, with which he was eliminated from the World Cup in the preliminary round against Wales, through an attempt in stoppage time.
