Challenge Yves du Manoir
The Challenge Yves du Manoir was a major tournament of the best rugby union teams in France , held from 1932 to 2003. It was named after the international Yves du Manoir , who died in a plane crash in January 1928.
history
The Challenge Yves du Manoir was officially launched on September 21, 1931 by the Racing Club de France , supported by two other clubs, CA Bègles and AS Montferrandaise . In 1930 twelve clubs decided to leave the Fédération Française de Rugby (FFR) and to found a rival association, the Union Française de Rugby Amateur (UFRA) , which existed until 1932 . In doing so, they protested against the increasing violence on the field and the creeping professionalism that finally led to the exclusion of France from the Five Nations tournament in 1931 .
Although the Racing Club was not one of these clubs and stayed with the FFR, the board was of the opinion that rugby should be made more attractive. There were special rules for this competition which encouraged an attractive and fast game. For example, there were no set pieces (neither penalties nor raises) to speed up the game.
The participating teams were invited by the Racing Club de France. The competitions in 1932, 1933 and 1952 were held in a round robin system. In the remaining years, a play-off in the knockout system was added after the round robin . The winner of the final won the cup. Besides the regular championship, the Challenge was the most important competition in France.
From 1940 to 1951 the challenge did not take place; during this time the FFR tried to establish the Coupe de France . In 1996, the FFR merged the Challenge with the Coupe de France to form the Trophée Du-Manoir Coupe de France . In 2001 the name changed to Coupe de la Ligue . In 2003, in the last year of its existence, the competition was called Challenge Sud-Radio .
In recent years the challenge had lost more and more of its importance as the best players took part in the more attractive European cup competitions Heineken Cup and European Challenge Cup and simply ran out of time next to the championship. Since 2004 the competition has lived on under the name Tournoi National des Ecoles de Rugby , although this is a tournament for players under 15 years of age.
