Section Paloise is a rugby union team from the French city of Pau in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department . It was spun off from the association of the same name in 1998 and reorganized as a stock corporation. The other departments of the club are boxing, fencing, karate, kendo, table tennis and pelota. The rugby team is represented in the top 14 league and plays its home games at the Stade du Hameau . Section Paloise has been French champion three times and won the European Challenge Cup in 2000 .
history
The club was founded in 1902 under the name Section Paloise de Ligue Girondine , whose members initially practiced athletics . In 1905 the club was renamed Section Paloise and they began to play rugby. After just a few years, the first team was able to establish itself close to the top.
Section Paloise won the championship title for the first time in 1928 and the prestigious Yves du Manoir Challenge in 1939 . In 1946 one could celebrate both the entry into the cup final and the second championship title. In 1950 the team advanced to the semi-finals of the championship and in 1952 the second win of the Challenge followed. Section Paloise won the third (and so far last) championship title in 1964.
In 1988, Section Paloise was relegated to the second division, but in 1991 managed to get promoted again. After good performance in the 1996/97 season (including winning the Challenge for the third time), the team qualified for the European Heineken Cup and was only eliminated in the semi-finals in 1998 against the eventual cup winners Bath Rugby . In 2000 the team won the European Challenge Cup , after beating Castres Olympique in the final .
After the final of the European Challenge Cup was lost to the Sale Sharks in 2005 , the performances in the championship left a lot to be desired and the team was relegated to the second division Rugby Pro D2 in 2006. It was not until nine years later that it was promoted back to the top 14, to which it has belonged continuously ever since.
