The Stadium Municipal is a rugby and football stadium in the French city of Toulouse , Haute-Garonne department . The stadium is mainly used by the local football club FC Toulouse , but the rugby club Stade Toulousain also moves from its own stadium, the Stade Ernest-Wallon , to the largest stadium in the city for top games . However, Toulouse FC is calling for a larger stadium to be built in order to meet their own requirements. The stadium offers 33,150 seats for visitors. Because of its similar shape, the Municipal Stadium is nicknamed Petit Wembley in reference to the old Wembley Stadium .
history
The sports facility, designed by French architect Jean Montariol for the 1938 World Cup , was inaugurated in 1937. Since then, it has been renovated twice: first in 1949 and 1997 for the 1998 World Cup . At the same time, during the last renovation, the seating capacity was increased to 37,000. In 1998, six world championship games were played at the Municipal Stadium.
The stadium was also the venue for games of the Rugby Union World Cups in 1991 , 1999 and 2007 , as well as the Rugby League World Cup in 1954 .
With a view to the European Football Championship in 2016 , the facility was rebuilt over three years from 2013 to 2016. The stadium was redesigned for 41.5 million euros according to the plans of the architects Cardete & Huet and Atelier Ferret. The seating in the stands was renewed and the seats were enlarged from 60 to 75 centimeters and a concert stage was installed in the east stand. Furthermore, the sanitary facilities and the snack stands were renewed. In addition, the press area had to be expanded.
Since football and rugby matches are played in the stadium, the lawn was not in good condition. The playing field made of natural grass was exchanged for a hybrid grass . A similar underground was laid in the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille . There was also a video surveillance system with 140 cameras in and around the stadium. In Ligue 1 , as in the Bundesliga , goal-line technology was introduced for the 2015/16 season . For this purpose, 14 cameras from the Goal Control system were installed in the Municipal Stadium.
