The Stade Auguste-Bonal is a football stadium and is located in Montbéliard , France . The FC Sochaux-Montbéliard here carries since 1931 its home games.

history

The old stadium

Three years after the club was founded, FC Sochaux and car manufacturer Peugeot decided to build a new stadium. It was built next to the car factory. When it opened on November 11, 1931, it was named Stade de la Forge and had 12,500 seats.

In July 1945 the venue got its current name. Named after the sports director of FC Sochaux Auguste Bonal , who was murdered in World War II . After the World War, the stadium fell into disrepair. In 1957 a floodlight system was built. Little happened in the following decades.

The attendance record dates back to May 16, 1976, when AS Saint-Étienne was a guest in front of 20,886 spectators. In recent years, the stadium was only approved for a few thousand people due to safety and comfort deficiencies.

The new stadium

In 1998, the arena stand by stand began to be demolished and rebuilt so that the game could continue. The capacity grew from initially 7,000 to 9,000, further to 13,000 by the time it was completed with 20,000 seats. The running track has been removed so that the fans can sit close to the field. The tiers of the stadium are completely covered. The playing field has underfloor heating and consists of a mixture of natural and artificial turf. The Stade Auguste-Bonal is the first stadium in France with this playing ground.

After 35 months of construction and financing by the Communauté d'agglomération Montbéliard, the Doubs department and the cities of Montbéliard and Sochaux, the new stadium was reopened in July 2000. The first official game in the new arena was the game for the Trophée des Champions on July 22, 2000 between AS Monaco and FC Nantes . The game ended 5-4 on penalties for Monaco.
