The Stade Michel-d'Ornano is the football stadium opened in 1993 in Caen , Calvados department in Normandy , France .
history
In the construction period from December 1991 to June 1993, the new stadium will replace the old Stade de Venoix . The arena owes its name to the former French politician Michel d'Ornano . The Stade de Venoix with cycle track was built in 1925; it only holds 9,000 spectators and did not meet the requirements of the first division .
On June 6, 1993, the new stadium was opened by the then French Prime Minister Édouard Balladur . At the inauguration, SM Caen played against FC Bayern Munich and won 4-1. FC Bayern had played the last game of the 92/93 season against FC Schalke 04 (3: 3) the day before .
The stadium was designed for a capacity of 22,864 spectators. By converting standing to seating after the “Drama of Furiani” , the number has been reduced to 21,500 today. The record attendance dates back to December 4, 2004, when SM Caen played against Olympique Marseille in front of 20,972 spectators . The total cost of the construction amounted to FF 149 million (approx. € 22.7 million). The arena extends over 180 m in length with a width of 163 m and it rises 18.50 m in height. The playing field dimensions are 105 m by 68 m. The floodlight system consists of 120 spotlights; attached to the stadium roof, it provides 1800 lux .
The stadium in Caen is the first of several stadiums such as the Stade Louis-Dugauguez (Sedan), Stade Auguste-Bonal (Sochaux) or the Stade de la Route de Lorient (Rennes), which consist of individual modules like a construction kit . The venues differ externally, but their internal structure is the same.
use
The stadium serves as the home ground of SM Caen . In addition, in July 2010 it was one of five venues for the U-19 European Football Championship in France. In addition to a group game, a semi-final and the final of the European Championship tournament took place in the Stade Michel-d'Ornano.
The stadium also served as the main stadium for the World Equestrian Games in August and September 2014 .
