The Stade René Gaillard is a football stadium with an athletics facility in Niort , Deux-Sèvres in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , France .
history
Opened on August 3, 1974 under the name Stade Venise Verte and later renamed Stade René Gaillard after the former mayor of Niort (1971–1985) René Gaillard . Today it has 10,898 places of which 9,553 places and 21 places for the disabled. It is the venue for Chamois Niort .
Chamois Niort rose in 1987 to the first division ; but rose again at the end of the season. It stayed that one season. On October 24, 1987, the game Chamois Niort- Olympique Marseille (1-0) gathered a record crowd of 16,715 spectators in the stands of the stadium.
In 2006 there was some renovation work on the venue, such as securing the guest parking lot, installing new surveillance cameras in the stadium and modernizing the players' cabins. Despite this work, the Stade René Gaillard no longer meets today's requirements for comfort, boxes or equipment for journalists. There have been plans for new buildings for several years; but which were pushed forward again and again.
In 2004, the construction project was put out to tender . The stadium should have 12,000 seats; meet the requirements of the second French league and easily expand to 20,000 seats. The design by the Chilean architect Borja Huidobro was selected at the end of 2004 and would cost around € 29 million . The construction was postponed again by the city council. The project has been put on hold until an unknown time.
