History and events

The sports facility designed by Bernard Zehrfuss was opened in 1939. It is named after the French historian Sébastien Charléty (* 1867, † 1945). After the Second World War , a wooden grandstand, changing rooms and a clubhouse were built. The French middle and long distance runner Michel Jazy set a new world record over 2,000 meters on June 14, 1962 with 5: 01.5 minutes.

On May 27, 1968, during the May riots in Paris, the student association Union nationale des étudiants de France met with 30,000 to 50,000 people in the stadium. On July 17, 1980, the French pole vaulter Philippe Houvion set a new world record with a height of 5.77 meters.

In the mid-1980s, the stadium's pitch was closed because the floor was contaminated by a virus. The earth was removed more than a meter deep, but not replaced because of the high costs. After only athletics could take place in the sports facility, the stadium fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1989.

The current arena was designed by Henri Gaudin and his son Bruno Gaudin. In 1994, the two received the Prix de l'Équerre d'argent architecture prize for their design . The stadium was opened in 1994 after more than three years of construction and cost 120 million  .

In 1999 the European Athletics Cup made a stop at Stade Charléty and in 2002 the IAAF Grand Prix Final took place. At the event, the US sprinter Tim Montgomery set a new world record over 100 m with 9.78 seconds; the time was later canceled due to doping . In the summer of 2006 tens of thousands came to the stadium to watch the games of the French national soccer team at the soccer world championship on a big screen .

On May 1, 2007, a concert for the then presidential candidate Ségolène Royal took place in the stadium. According to various sources, between 55,000 (police) and 80,000 (organizers) people came together in and around the arena. Numerous French artists came to the event such as B. Bénabar , Cali , Damien Saez , Christophe Miossec , Yannick Noah , Renaud , Grand Corps Malade , Mafia K'1 Fry, Michel Delpech, Kery James , Têtes Raides , Sapho, Leni Escudero, Yvan der Bolloch, Disiz la Peste .

In the years 1995 to 1998, 2007, 2008 and 2011 to 2015, the championship final of the French championship Elite de Football Américain , the Casque de Diamant , was held in the sports facility. The national soccer teams of France and Mali met on March 25, 2008 in a friendly match that ended with a 3-2 win for the hosts.

The Paris FC football club has played its home games in the stadium since 2007 , as its previous venue, the Stade Déjerine, no longer meets the requirements. In addition, the women’s soccer players from Paris Saint-Germain played their league and Champions League matches there from 2012 to 2017 .

In April 2017, the European Athletics Championships 2020 were awarded to the city of Paris. The competitions are to take place from August 26th to 30th of the year in the Stade Charléty. The stadium has hosted the Meeting de Paris athletics event since 2017 .

The 10th Gay Games were held in Paris in August 2018  . The Stade Charléty was one of the venues. Competitions in athletics , squash , roller derby and cheerleading took place there.
