The Championnat Élite de Football Américain , also known as Casque de Diamant , is the competition for the French championship title in American football . The organizer is the French football association Fédération Française de Football Américain (FFFA). The competition has been held in league mode with subsequent play-offs since 1982. Until 1994, the final and the championship title were called Casque d'Or .
history
For the first season in 1982 there were only four teams, all of which came from the greater Paris area. The Spartacus de Paris team won the title with a 44-0 win in the final for the Casque d'Or (Golden Helmet) against Méteores de Nogent. In the early years, the Panthères Jaunes de Nantes was only represented once in 1984 by a team from outside the capital region. In 1986 ten teams competed, all from Paris and its suburbs.
With the 1987 season and the expansion of the league to 16 teams, the Casque d'Or really became a national competition. The Aix-en-Provence Argonautes were the first team from outside the Île-de-France to reach the semi-finals. Two years later they even reached the final, in which the Paris Castors celebrated their third title in a row, replacing Spartacus as record champions. From 1990 to 1992 the Argonautes copied this series and also won three titles in a row.
For the 1995 season, the name of the championship was changed to Casque de Diamant (diamond helmet). The title of the second division was renamed from Casque d'Argent (Silver Helmet) to Casque d'Or. The Casque d'Argent was henceforth awarded as a championship of the third division. The first Casque de Diamant went to the Aix-en-Provence Argonautes. By 2002 four more national titles followed, making the Argonautes the most successful national team with eight championships. By reaching the Casque de Diamant in 2004, the Argonautes were represented in the final of the French championship for 16 consecutive years, and this record is still there today.
The most frequent opponent of the Argonautes in the Casque de Diamant was Flash de La Courneuve . With five titles in a row from 2005 to 2009, Flash set a record that continues to this day, replacing the Argonautes as the dominant team in the championship. In the 2011 season, Flash won the ninth championship title and has been the French record champion ever since.
The titles in 2013 and 2014 went to the Thonon Black Panthers , who had to admit defeat to the current title holder Saint-Ouen Cougars in the Casque de Diamant 2015.
mode
The league is divided into two groups, a north and a south group, each with four teams. In the regular season there are both matches within the group and games between teams from different groups, the best four teams in the overall table reach the play-offs, the first receiving the fourth and the second receiving the third. The relegation candidates, or the participants in the relegation, are determined based on the rankings within the groups. The games against teams in the other group are also rated.
The mode has existed in this form since 2011, with the number of teams in the North group differing between four and five. The number of games played by the teams within and outside of their own group varied accordingly. Each team is currently playing a home game and an away game against opponents in their own group. Teams from different groups meet each other once.
