The Elite Football League of India (EFLI) is a professional American football league in India. It was founded in 2011 and the first season was played in 2012/2013. It includes eight franchises , six from India and one team each from Pakistan and Sri Lanka .

history

The establishment of EFLI was announced on August 5th, 2011 in Mumbai . The first game was played on September 22, 2012. EFLI games are televised in India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, as well as in the Maldives , Bangladesh , Nepal , Hong Kong , Indonesia and Japan and thus have a reach of over 500 million viewers. The second season begins in November 2015.

League structure

The EFLI consists of eight teams. The players and coaches are all native South Asians, but management is led by football officials from the United States. The teams all have one owner, as the league follows a franchise system . The teams were auctioned off for this purpose. Unlike other sports leagues in India, the owners are allowed to be both Indian and foreign. 15% of league revenues go to the Ministry of Sports of India . An expansion to 52 franchises should take place in 2022.
