Italian Bowl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Italian Bowl is the final of the Italian American Football Championship and is hosted by the Italian Football Association FIDAF. Until 2014 the game was played under the name Superbowl italiano . The current title holders are the Rhinos from Milan.

history

The first final according to the official count of the Italian championship took place in 1981. The winners of this game were the Rhinos Milano , who celebrated a 24-8 win against the Gallarate Frogs . At that time, the final was called Superball and was organized by the AIFA (Associazione Italiana Football Americano). The second final a year later was based on the NFL final under the name Superbowl II . Again the Rhinos prevailed against the Frogs and the third final went to the Rhinos.

From 1988 the Superbowl Italiano was organized by the Federazione Italiana American Football (FIAF), the successor organization to the AIFA. In 1989 the Legnano Frogs celebrated their third title win in a row and replaced the Milano Rhinos as record champions with their fourth title. The 1998 season began the great era of the Bergamo Lions , who won eleven titles in a row by 2008. As a result of the FIAF's exclusion from the national Olympic federation CONI , the National Football League Italy was founded, which continued to operate the Italian Superbowl from 2002. For the 2008 season there were two parallel championships in Italy. In addition to the NFLI, which hosted the Superbowl italiano XXVIII , the Italian Football League , whose final was called the Italian Super Bowl , started its first season. Both finalists and another three of the eight NFLI teams of the 2007 season joined the new IFL. The remaining three teams, including the first of the regular season, the Marines Lazio, initially remained loyal to the NFLI. For the 2009 season, the remaining top teams switched to the IFL and the NFLI was dissolved. The Italian Superbowl was then played by the Federazione Italiana Football , while the IFL took over the function of the official Italian championship with the Italian Super Bowl .

2The count was not continued in 2008 because the NFLI hosted the Superbowl italiano XXVIII , but this was not regarded as an official national championship. In some lists, the finals from 2008 to 2011 are numbered with the Roman numerals I to IV. However, numbers never appeared in the logos of the event.
3 In 2012, the count continued from 2007, taking into account the finals between 2008 and 2012.
