Santa Margherita Ligure ( Ligurian Santa Margaita or Santa Margaitta ), also called the pearl of Tigullio , is a city with 8973 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Genoa . geography
Santa Margherita Ligure is located on the Riviera di Levante in Liguria , on the east side of the Cape of Portofino and in the middle of the Gulf of Tigullio (Italian: Golfo del Tigullio ). The city is located about 35 kilometers from the regional capital Genoa and is surrounded by the foothills of the Ligurian Apennines . The vegetation is Mediterranean with parks and gardens that offer a view of the Costa dei Delfini (Dolphin Coast), which separates the municipality from Portofino.
Part of the communal territory is located in the Parco naturale Regional di Portofino ( Portofino Regional Natural Park). In addition, Santa Margherita Ligure manages the Portofino marine reserve together with the municipalities of Camogli and Portofino .

Culture and sights
Movie
On the Gulf of Tigullio, as well as in Santa Margherita Ligure itself, numerous Italian films were made in the 1960s and 1980s. In 1973, the city served as the setting for parts of the film La polizia incrimina, la legge assolve by director Enzo Castellari .
In 1988, director Maurizio Ponzi chose the municipality as the location for some episodes of the comedy Il volpone .
economy
The economy of Santa Margherita Ligure is largely based on tourism . The community is attractive to travelers from all over the world thanks to the large number of seaside resorts , the luxurious hotels and, last but not least, the location in the immediate vicinity of the tourist magnet Portofino . Cruise tourism is also important .
The city's port is used as an anchorage for yachts , as well as for traditional fishing boats. It is also the starting point for various water sports events such as internationally renowned regattas .
Infrastructure
Road traffic
Santa Margherita Ligure is on the coastal road that connects Rapallo with Portofino. The community itself is not directly connected to the motorway, but can be reached from the A12 via the Rapallo exit. From there, Santa Margherita can be reached either via Via Aurelia (SP 1) or via the road from San Michele di Pagana . However, both roads are often congested.
However, the Via Aurelia does not allow direct access. At San Lorenzo della Costa , on the other hand, a narrow connecting road, which is not recommended for trucks , leads into the inhabited center of the city. The road from San Michele di Pagana is about three kilometers shorter than the former, but is characterized by a severe narrowing of the lane so that only one vehicle can pass at a time.
Because of these infrastructure problems, various transport projects are in the planning phase, including the construction of a tunnel to Rapallo.
Public transport
The Santa Margherita-Portofino train station is on the Pisa – La Spezia – Genoa railway line in the section between Genoa and La Spezia .
shipping
There are regular boat connections from Santa Margherita Ligure to Portofino, San Fruttuoso and the Cinque Terre , as well as to the major centers of Liguria Rapallo, Sestri Levante , Chiavari and Genoa.
