Masone ( Ligurian Mazun , Mazzon or Mason ) is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Genoa with 3593 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

geography

Masone is an important center in the Stura Valley and, together with three other Ligurian municipalities, forms the mountain community of Valli Stura e Orba . The common land is in the Beigua Natural Park .

The municipality is located on the northern side of the Ligurian Apennines , which in this section comes very close to the coast of the Ligurian Sea . The district of Cappelletta is practically at the height of the ridge in the direction of Bric del Dente , behind which the park boundaries of the Beigua Nature Park are.

The communal center of Masone is divided into two parts. The historic center (also called Paese vecchio ) is located on the southern slopes of a small hill (432 meters), on which Spinola Castle stood until the first half of the 18th century . This city hill rises on the left ( orographic ) side of the Stura brook .

In the first decades of the 19th century a second community center (the Paese nuovo ) was built on an alluvial plain (391 meters). This level is located downhill at the confluence of the two streams Stura and Vezzulla on the right side of the former.

According to the Italian classification for seismic activity , Masone was assigned to zone 4. This means that the community is in a seismically safe zone.
