Fernando Masone
Fernando Masone (born April 6, 1936 in Pesco Sannita ; † July 1, 2003 in Rome ) was the Italian chief of police from 1994 to 2000 and thus head of the Polizia di Stato . He then became coordinator of the Italian intelligence services .
Life
After studying law , Fernando Masone joined the state police in 1963 and initially worked as a deputy commissioner in a police station in Campobasso . From 1973 to 1979 he headed the mobile criminal police unit ( squadra mobile ) of the Rome Police Headquarters ( questura ), in which he had been active since 1964. In 1979 Masone became head of the Lazio Regional Criminal Police Directorate . From 1988 he led the police headquarters in Caserta , Palermo and Rome. On August 27, 1994, he was appointed head of the State Police. Under his leadership, the state police achieved a number of successes against organized crime in Sicily and Apulia .
On May 31, 2000 Giovanni De Gennaro replaced him as Italian police chief. Masone then became head of CESIS , a department in the Presidency of the Council of Ministers responsible for coordinating Italian intelligence. Masone died in the summer of 2003 after a long illness at the age of 67.
