Demographic development

economy

The hinterland of Sori with some associated settlements

The agricultural production of Sori was, favored by the extensive settlement of the valleys around the municipality, an important branch of the economy with products from olive and grain cultures as well as animal husbandry and forestry . Today the importance of agriculture has decreased significantly. Only in the field of plant breeding still exist a few companies in Sori with a focus on basil and ornamental plant breeding . Olive oil production is also of some importance .

The industrial sector was very pronounced until the 1960s with the presence of numerous foundries . However, with the expansion of the transport infrastructure, many companies migrated to better connected and more cost-effective regions. Today a few brass foundries are still in operation along Provincial Road 71 , mainly producing for the nautical sector. Two factories make pasta products (especially Trofie ) and a large number of small businesses make nautical specialty products.

In the service sector , tourism dominates , which is favored by the proximity to Lombardy and Piedmont . Day-trippers from the nearby regional capital Genoa are also important . There are five seasonal beach baths available in Sori for beach holidays.

The majority of Sori's residents are employed in Genoa or the neighboring production centers.

Legends

A legend of the stone statue of the Madonna del Pontin is still spread in the fishing village today . According to legend, the statue depicting the Virgin Mary with the sea in the background fell into the sea three times and was returned to the land three times.

During an attack by Turkish pirates on July 1, 1584, the statue was stolen from the church and taken to a ship, but according to legend, it was impossible for the pirates to set sail, so they were forced to throw it into the sea . It was then salvaged by the Soresers and placed on the medieval bridge in 1637 .

On June 19, 1944, Sori was under a heavy bombardment by Allied planes, which also hit the statue. Legend has it that the statue was found intact on the beach eleven years later in January 1955 by fishermen from Sori and placed on the newly built bridge.
