Camogli ( Ligurian Kamùgi or Camoggi , in the Genoese dialect Camuggi ) is an Italian municipality with 5,168 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Genoa . Camogli is located on the west side of the Portofino peninsula , on the Golfo Paradiso on the Riviera di Levante . The name means "house of the wives" ( casa delle mogli ). Most of the Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino and part of the Portofino marine reserve belong to Camogli .

Camogli was a sizable port town in the late Middle Ages. In its heyday, Camogli's fleet consisted of hundreds of tall ships. It was called the "City of a Thousand White Sailing Ships". In 1798 the city provided a large contingent of the Napoleonic fleet, which was defeated in Egyptian waters near Abukir by Admiral Nelson. The prestigious Cristoforo Colombo Marine College, founded in 1874, continues the nautical tradition, as does a retirement home for captains. In 1880 the city (with a population of 12,000) had 500 patented ship captains. The former fishing village of Camogli, which today lives mainly from tourism, is known for its colorful houses that line up behind the beach. The colors once helped the fishermen of Camogli to find their way back to their port more easily after the catch.

The top division water polo players from the local swimming club RN Camogli, who won several Italian championships after the Second World War, are known nationwide to this day. A swimming pool located directly by the sea is one of the most important buildings of recent date.

The city's mayor has been Francesco Olivari since 2013.

Camogli has maintained partnership relationships with the German community of Tuningen in Baden-Württemberg since 1998 .
