Sestri Levante ( Ligurian Séstri ) is an Italian commune with 18,082 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Liguria region , metropolitan city of Genoa (GE).
geography
Between Chiavari and Lavagna in the north and Levanto in the south, Sestri Levante lies on the coast of the Golfo Tigullio ( Riviera di Levante ) in two bays; its old town occupies the small, towering peninsula Portobello in front of it. Sestri Levante covers an area of 33.33 km² with suburbs . There are direct rail connections to the west to Genoa and south-east to La Spezia . The Monte Castello on a green peninsula south of the urban area rises 285 m high.

- Mount Monte Castello and the path to it through extensive parks and views of the place. However, the area around a hotel is not open to the public. On the mountain are also the church of San Nicoló from ~ 1151 and the ruins of the monastery of Santa Caterina (16th century, destroyed in a bombing in 1944).
Culture
In Sestri Levante, a children's literature prize named after Hans Christian Andersen , the Premio Andersen, is awarded annually. In late spring (May / June) there is also the Andersen Festival with street theater in numerous public places. Andersen stayed here several times.

Sestri Levante has a train station on the Pisa – Genova railway line . Since the railway line was relocated with the double-track expansion in the area of Sestri Levante, a new station was opened in 1926, which replaced the previous one and still exists today. It is served by InterCitys (IC) and regional trains (R). The InterCity line Milano Centrale - Genova Piazza Principe - Sestri Levante - La Spezia Centrale (- Pisa Centrale - Livorno Centrale (- Grosseto )) stops every two hours with individual intervals. In addition, two pairs of trains run on the InterCity line Torino Porta Nuova - Genova Piazza Principe - Sestri Levante - La Spezia Centrale - Pisa Centrale - Livorno Centrale (- Grosseto - Roma Termini - Napoli Centrale - Salerno ).
