Lambruschini entered the Order of Barnabites and was ordained priestly for his order on January 1, 1799 , and then became secretary to Cardinal Ercole Consalvi , who took him to the Congress of Vienna and used him in the conclusion of several concordats. On September 27, 1819, he was appointed Archbishop of Genoa by Pope Pius VII . The episcopal ordination donated him on October 3, 1819 Cardinal Giulio Maria della Somaglia ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Francesco Bertazzoli and Archbishop Gianfranco Guerrieri , Bishop of Rimini . On October 14, 1826, he was also apostolic nuncio in France , where he advised Charles X to adopt a reactionary policy, including the enactment of July ordinances. On June 26, 1830, he resigned both offices and received the titular archbishopric of Berytus .

Gregory XVI. elevated him on September 30, 1831 to cardinal priest with the titular church of San Callisto and in 1836 appointed him Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Public Education; later he took over the secretariat of the papal breven , became a librarian in the Vatican , Grand Prior of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and Grand Chancellor of the Order of St. Gregory. With fanaticism he represented the most rigid absolutism and pursued every innovation. He also fought against the free movements in the church and wrote the state pamphlets in the Cologne bishops' dispute with Prussia. He was therefore very hateful, especially in the Papal States , and because of his lust for power, the Cardinals also did not vote him in conclave by Gregory XVI. Death in 1846. With Pius' IX. Accession to the throne was therefore played out its political role. The new Pope appointed him a member of the newly established Consulta di Stato , secretary of the papal breven and senior librarian in the Vatican. He was Prefect of the Congregations for Religious Discipline 1833-1834, for Catholic Education in 1834 and the Congregation for Rites from 1847 to 1854. In 1842 Lambruschini was Cardinal Bishop of Sabina , in 1847 of Porto and Santa Rufina and Civitavecchia , Subdean of the Holy College and Grand Chancellor of all orders of the Holy See . Threatened by the people when the unrest broke out in 1848, he went to Civitavecchia for a short time . After Rossi's murder in 1848, he fled to Monte Cassino , later to Naples and finally to Pius IX. to Gaeta . In April 1850 he returned to Rome with the Pope, where he died as his house cardinal on May 12, 1854.
