Antonio Domenico Gamberini (born October 31, 1760 in Imola , Italy , † April 25, 1841 in Rome ) was Bishop of Orvieto and later Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Gamberini, son of a patrician family , studied first with his father, a lawyer, and then in Rome. In 1798 he returned to Imola and established himself as a lawyer during the French rule over Europe. After the restoration of the Papal States , he began his career at the Curia . Pope Pius VII appointed Gamberini in 1818 as a consultant at the Apostolic Signature and awarded him the title of Papal House Prelate . In the same year he became an auditor of the Roman Rota . In 1823 he became secretary of the Congregation for the Clergy . Pope Leo XII. appointed him canon of the Vatican Basilica after his election.

Gamberini was ordained a priest on February 29, 1824 . In December 1825 Leo XII appointed him. to the Bishop of Orvieto. He was ordained bishop on January 15, 1826 by Cardinal Pietro Francesco Galleffi . Co-consecrators were Giuseppe Della Porta Rodiani and Filippo Filonardi . In the consistory of December 15, 1828, the Pope accepted him as a cardinal priest of Santa Prassede into the college of cardinals . The next year he took part in the conclave of 1829 and after the death of Pius VIII also in the conclave of 1830-1831 .

In 1833 Cardinal Gamberini laid down the leadership of the Orvieto diocese and was led by Gregory XVI. appointed Secretary of State for internal church affairs after the Pope had previously divided the state secretariat into the section for internal church affairs and the section for non-church affairs. In his office, he enforced the prosecution of smugglers and increased surveillance of begging. In 1839 he was accepted into the ranks of the Cardinal Bishops and received the Suburbicarian diocese of Sabina .

In 1840 he resigned from office for health reasons and died the following year at the age of 80. He was buried in his former titular church, Santa Prassede .
