Antonio Francesco Orioli OFM Conv (born December 10, 1778 in Bagnacavallo , Italy , † February 20, 1852 in Rome ) was Bishop of Orvieto and Cardinal of the Curia .

Life

Orioli joined the Order of the Minorites and made profession in 1793 . He then studied theology until 1804 and was ordained a priest . From 1807 to 1809 he was lecturer in theology at the College of St. Bonaventure in Rome. After spending three years in France, he returned to Italy in 1812 and in 1817 became a professor at St. Bonaventure. Pope Pius VII appointed Orioli as consultor to the Index Congregation . In September 1832 he became Vicar General of the Franciscan Order.

Pope Gregory XVI appointed him on April 15, 1833 Bishop of Orvieto. He received his episcopal ordination on May 1st of the same year Cardinal Vicar Giacinto Placido Zurla ; Co- consecrators were the future Cardinal Giovanni Soglia Ceroni and Alessandro Bernetti , Bishop of Recanati e Loreto . On February 12, 1838, Gregory XVI took him. as cardinal priest of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in the College of Cardinals .

In December 1841, Cardinal Orioli resigned the leadership of the Orvieto diocese and five years later took part in the 1846 conclave . The new Pope Pius IX. appointed him on May 2, 1847 prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars. From May 5 to June 4, 1848 he was also Cardinal Secretary of State ad interim . In 1850 Pius IX showed him. the titular church of Santi XII Apostoli to.

Antonio Francesco Orioli died in 1852 and was buried in Santi XII Apostoli . Pope Pius IX personally took part in the funeral mass.
