Placido Zurla OSBCam (born April 2, 1769 in Legnago as Giacinto Francesco Zurla , † October 29, 1834 in Palermo ) was an Italian religious, cardinal and cardinal vicar .

Life

Giacinto Francesco Zurla, from a wealthy family, joined the Camaldolese order in 1787 and was given the name Placido Maria . He went to the monastery of San Michele di Murano in Venice , where he met the young monk Mauro Cappellari , later Pope Gregory XVI. He was later ordained a priest and became a lecturer in philosophy and theology. In 1802 he published a short version of the Summa theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas . He also published writings on medieval geography, inspired by Fra Mauro's world map , which was created in his monastery of San Michele di Murano. In 1809 Zurla became abbot of San Michele.

In 1810 the French converted the monastery into a college and Zurla was rector. In 1814 he became professor of theology at the Patriarchal Seminary of Venice, which he remained until the autumn of 1821. In Rome he became consultor of the Congregation De Propaganda Fide , and in 1822 he was given the same office in the Index Congregation . From 1823 to 1833 Zurla was Abbot General of the Camaldolese.

In the consistory of March 10, 1823 it took Pope Pius VII. As Cardinal Priest of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in the College of Cardinals on. Pius VII took up Cardinal Zurla's creation in pectore , and did not make it public until May 16 of the same year. After the Pope's death, Zurla participated in the conclave in 1823 . Pope Leo XII. appointed him in January 1824 cardinal vicar and titular archbishop of Edessa in Osrhoëne . He received the episcopal ordination on January 18, 1824 by Cardinal Dean Giulio Maria della Somaglia . Co-consecrators were the later cardinals Giuseppe Della Porta Rodiani and Lorenzo Girolamo Mattei , who was then the Latin Patriarch of Antioch. In the same year he also became protector of the English College in Rome and the College of the Maronites. He took part in the conclave in 1829 and was appointed cardinal protector of the Carmelites and Dominicans by Pope Pius VIII in 1830 . In the same year Cardinal Zurla took part in the conclave , from which in 1831 his close friend Mauro Cappellari became the new pontiff Gregory XVI. emerged.

Cardinal Zurla traveled to Sicily in 1834, where he died during the trip. He was buried in the cathedral of Palermo before he was transferred to Rome. His grave is now in the Church of San Gregorio in Monte Celio . In 2009, his hometown Legnago issued a special cancellation for his 240th birthday.
