Carlo Odescalchi SJ (born March 5, 1785 in Rome , † August 17, 1841 in Modena ) was an Italian cardinal and cardinal vicar from the Odescalchi family .

Life

Odescalchi, who u. a. with the former Pope Innocent XI. was related, fled with his family to Hungary due to the French occupation. From 1798 he studied in the Roman seminary there. In 1809, when he was back in Rome, he was able to obtain a doctorate in civil and canon law. On December 31, 1808 he was ordained a priest .

Pope Pius VII appointed him his house prelate in 1809, and in 1815 he sent him to Olomouc as a legate . Four years later, Odescalchi brought the newly appointed Cardinal Rudolf Johannes Joseph Rainer of Habsburg-Lothringen the red biretta .

On March 10, 1823, Pius VII accepted the 38-year-old Odescalchi himself into the college of cardinals , he was assigned the titular church of Santi XII Apostoli . Two months later received his Cardinal Dean Giulio Maria della Somaglia the episcopal ordination , co-consecrators were Giuseppe Della Porta Rodiani , Patriarch of Constantinople Opel, and Lorenzo Girolamo mat , Patriarch of Antioch. Odescalchi was officially Archbishop of Ferrara . He took part in the conclave in 1823 . For the new Pope Leo XII. Cardinal Odescalchi organized the preparations for the Holy Year 1825. In February 1828 he became Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops . He then took part in the conclaves of 1829 and 1830-1831 .

Pope Gregory XVI took him in 1833 in the ranks of the cardinal bishops and assigned him the suburbicarian diocese of Sabina . A year later, on November 21, 1834, he appointed him cardinal vicar . In 1837, in this capacity, he supported the Roman population in containing the cholera epidemic. In February 1838 he became Grand Prior of the Order of Malta. Only nine months later, Odescalchi gave back all offices and dignities and entered the Jesuit order in 1840. After all, the former cardinal carried out missionary activities in northern Italy. There he died in 1841 at the age of only 56. Under Pope Pius XI. the process of beatification for Carlo Odescalchi was opened in March 1927.
