Michael Reinhard Hess

Michael Reinhard Heß (born December 28, 1967 in Offenbach am Main ) is a German Turkologist and researcher of the Azerbaijani poet Imadeddin Nesimi (1370-1417).

Life

Heß studied Modern History, Greek Studies, Islamic Studies and Turkology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and received his doctorate from the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . He later completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin with fundamental research on the life and works of the Azerbaijani poet Imamedin Nesimi (1370–1417). Heß has been a private lecturer in Turkish Studies at the Free University of Berlin since 2005 .

So far, Hess has written academic papers with more than 130 titles. His focus is on historical and synchronic linguistics of the Turkic languages, classical oriental poetry, classical Azerbaijani literature (Nesimi), Ottoman history, modern literature of Turkey and the history of religious movements in the Middle East.

Heß also translates from Turkish and from Azerbaijani. For the translation of Metin Kaçan's “Cholera Blues”, Heß received the Tarabya Translator Award Istanbul in 2010 . He also translated "Hazelnut 8" from Kaçan.
