Giulio Maria Conte della Somaglia (born July 29, 1744 in Piacenza , † April 2, 1830 in Rome ) was Cardinal State Secretary of the Papal States from 1823 to 1828.

Life

After studying in Rome at the Collegio Nazareno , he was promoted to Dr. jur. utr. doctorate and appointed papal house prelate by Pope Clement XIV , after he had appointed him as his private treasurer in 1769. Pope Pius VI Appointed him in March 1775 as secretary of the Congregation for Rites and in February 1787 transferred him to the Consistorial Congregation . On June 2, 1787, he received the sacrament of ordination . Titular Patriarch of on December 15, 1788 Antioch collected, Cardinal received his Hyacinthe Sigismond Gerdil the episcopal ordination . Now appointed Vicar General of Rome, he soon became Prefect of the Consistorial Congregation. On June 1, 1795 della Somaglia was in the consistory of Pius VI. the cardinal created and cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Sabina appointed, after 1798, the survey on the archpriest of the Basilica of St. John Lateran followed in 1800 and prefect of the Congregation of Rites.

Since July 20, 1801 he was cardinal priest of the titular church Santa Maria sopra Minerva . Since he refused to recognize Napoleon Bonaparte's wedding to Archduchess Marie-Louise of Austria in 1810 , Napoleon forbade him to wear his official attire, and Cardinal della Somaglia became one of the thirteen so-called Black Cardinals . After he was released from French captivity in April 1814 he was transferred to the restitution of the Papal States just a month later, Secretary of the Congregation of the Roman and universal Inquisition . Elected Cardinal Bishop of Frascati on September 26, 1814 , he was also cardinal priest of the titular church of San Lorenzo in Damaso in Commendam from October 2, 1818 . After he changed as Cardinal Bishop to Porto e Santa Rufina on December 21, 1818 , he became Cardinal Bishop of Ostia and Cardinal Dean on May 29, 1820 . As such, he led the papal elections in 1823 and 1829 . Under Pope Leo XII. Cardinal della Somaglia then held the post of Cardinal Secretary of State from 1823 to the beginning of 1828. At the same time, however, he also held other offices at the Curia; between 1824 and 1826 he headed the De Propaganda Fide congregation .

At his death in 1830 he was the last cardinal from the pontificate of Pius VI. (1775-1799). Cardinal della Somaglia was buried in the Roman church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva .
