Leonardo Cardinal Antonelli

Leonardo Antonelli (* 6. November 1730 in Senigallia , Papal States ; † 23 January 1811 ibid) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church .

Life

He was the nephew of Cardinal Nicolò Maria Antonelli (1759).

Leonardo Antonelli was appointed secretary of the Consistorial Congregation and the Holy College of Cardinals in March 1757 . In this capacity he was also secretary to the conclave of 1758 . Pope Clement XIII. appointed him in September 1766 as assessor of the Roman Inquisition. In January 1768 Antonelli wrote a letter in which he defended the Pope against the court of the Duchy of Parma . As a result, the clergyman Saverio Antonelli was mistaken for him in an assassination attempt and murdered.

He was by Pope Pius VI. appointed cardinal priest of Santa Sabina on April 24, 1775 . On May 2, 1780 Pius VI appointed him. as Prefect of the Congregation De Propaganda Fide . After his appointment as Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina, he was on 19 March 1794 by Giovanni Francesco Albani bishop ordained . Co-consecrators were the Curia Bishops Ottavio Boni and Simone de Magistris , CO .

Cardinal Antonelli supported the civil constitution of the clergy in France in 1790 so that Catholic services would not have to stop. In 1797 he spoke out against the Peace of Tolentino and was taken prisoner by the French the following year. Under Pius VII he was secretary of the Congregation of the Roman and General Inquisition from 1800 to 1811 and headed the Index Congregation from December 1801 until his death . He followed the Pope to Paris to take part in Napoleon's coronation in 1804. In 1809 Antonelli was expelled from Rome by the French rulers , then sought refuge in Spoleto and ultimately in his hometown Senigallia. He was one of the first cardinals to campaign for the re-establishment of the Jesuit order. On August 3, 1807, as Cardinal Dean and Cardinal Bishop of Ostia, he became the highest-ranking member of the College of Cardinals . After his death in 1811, Cardinal Antonelli was buried in the Cathedral of Senigallia .
